¡ Department of Photography

A photograph is a record of an objectc However, in actuality, the "statement" made by a single photograph can vary greatly according to the perspective and intentions of the photographer. This is the allure and profoundness of photography. The Department of Photography, based on nearly 80 years of experience and know how in the field of photography education, has assembled a staff of instructors who work on the cutting-edge, in modern photography studios with the latest facilities and equipment. It provides students with the techniques and knowledge necessary for a variety of photographic objectives such as fine art, journalism, nature photography, portraits, and advertisements. A student who aims to refine individual perspective and power of expression is also supported, as the Department creates an environment conducive for freely pursuing the unknown world of photography.

An Orthodox Photography Education that Begins with Fundamentals.

Based on the idea that photographs are capable of eliciting joy and other emotions, the Department of Photography has been at the forefront of photography education. It has recognized photography as an artistic field, ever since its origin in 1923 as the Konishi Professional School of Photography. Building on this tradition and accumulated experience, an educational environment is provided that begins with instruction in the photography fundamentals, and is applicable to both analog and digital technology.

Compelling Lectures by Noted Photographers.

The instructors in this department are active professionals who continuously strive to exceed the present era. Noted Japanese and international photographers are invited to give special lectures. Communication with professionals already working in the field gives students the opportunity to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness, a more thorough understand of photography, and to cultivate a rich creative sense.

Photography Gallery as a Place to Refine One's Artistic Sensitivity.

The school holds photography Gallery that possesses a collection of more than 3,500 works. Here, original prints from distinguished photographers are exhibited for two months at a time. The Gallery is visited by not only photography students, but also by many other students from different departments. The various works of art at ours Gallery will amaze students and stimulate their potential to become future artists, incite the desire to create new works of art, and refine their sensitivity to enable the generation of flexible and bold ideas.
