The Faculty of Engineering fosters highly specialized
learning and the thoroughly studying a field
of specialty is a large goal, however, we
believe an extensive basic education is critically
important before ascending this high peak.
The center has been organized to tend to
students; to ensure they reliably receive
a basic education for the purposes of cultivating
well-rounded people with a broad outlook that
are able to make appropriate decisions from
large amounts of information, and are healthy
in body and mind.
Many subjects also exist within the large
headings of basic science, foreign languages,
human sciences, health and physical education,
and teacher-training curriculum. There are
also courses with a wealth of variety deployed
in an omnibus format which can be studied
without regard to course, department or school
year.
This will surely lead to careful learning
of further specialized topics within studies
at the department. Lessons at General Education
and Research Center cover extensive learning
and various encounters among teaching staff
and students. From this, perhaps new interests
will be born and the breadth of learning extended.
Given that the three subjects of mathematics,
physics and chemistry are the foundation subjects
for the study of engineering, these subjects
are studied in combined forms of proficiency-based
lectures, practice lectures, and experiment
lectures.
With proficiency-based lectures, a placement
test is held prior to subject registration
and if so desired by students, it is possible
to commence with a review of senior high-school
studies. There are teaching staff at the Learning
Support Center within the campus which have
senior high-school teacher experience.
Beginning with essential English, it is also
possible to take classes in German, French
and Chinese. The classes of all subjects are
further divided, with lectures conducted in
small groups. In conversation classes where
communication between teaching staff and students
is particularly important, lessons are conducted
with the reliable participation of each and
every student.
Furthermore, two gCALL (computer aided language
learning)h classrooms have been set aside
for self-study use after school hours.
Fitness exercises are conducted in health
and physical education subjects that enables
learning fundamental knowledge of health and
exercise whilst regulating individual physical
activity.
For students which harbor specialized interests
within their studies, the General Education
and Research Center offers guidance to further
deepen interests and supports newly created
approaches.
We think we play a thankless but vital role.
We are constantly considering how learning
can be done in a forward facing manner and
how to make this happen for students that
have entered university.
Within the long, yet short, precious period
of four years, our hope at the General Education
and Research Center is that amidst their university
lives, students feel good about having studied
hard for the first two years, and are able
to experience a transformation in themselves
over that two year period.
