Most lectures and seminars of Graduate School of Arts are conducted in Japanese, so applicants are required to have a high level of Japanese language proficiency.

Entrance Examination Fee

Entrance examination fee: ¥30,000
Prepare a postal order for ¥30,000 to cover the cost of the entrance examination fee at a post office. Do not write anything on the postal order.

Announcements of Examination Results (Announcement will not be posted on a bulletin board on campus)

  1. Announcement of result
    A letter of acceptance will be sent to all successful applicants by mail on the day of announcement of result.
    * Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
    * We cannot accept any inquiries about results by telephone or e-mail under any circumstances.
  2. Other way of confirming results
    The applicant ID numbers of successful applicants will be posted on the Tokyo Polytechnic University website at 13:00 on the day of announcement of examination results until three days later.

  3. The documentation required for enrollment will be sent to all successful applicants together with the letter of acceptance.
    The deadline for completing all enrollment procedures is January 7 (Tuesday.)

Notes on Application

  1. The deadlines of application must be strictly observed.
  2. Submitted documentation and paid entrance examination fees cannot be returned and refunded under any circumstances.
  3. Flawed application documents will not be accepted, so make sure everything is double-checked before submission.
  4. If your contact address changes after you submit application, please let us know immediately.
  5. You cannot revise or re-submit any documentation once you send your application. We do not accept it under any circumstances.
  6. Any false entries on application and enrollment documentation will result in cancellation of admission, even after the student has commenced studies.
  7. All courses will be offered in the Nakano Campus.

Notice on Examination

  1. An admission ticket for examination containing an applicant ID number will be issued to all examinees once the application procedures have been completed. You must bring it to the examination hall on the day of the examination.
  2. Contact the admissions office if you do not receive your admission ticket by the day before the examination.
  3. Follow the directions of the officials in charge of the examination if you are late or forget to bring the ticket.
  4. During the test time, applicant cannot place on the desk any item other than the admission ticket, writing tools (pencils, eraser, etc.) and other articles permitted by the Graduate School of Arts (small pencil sharpeners, wristwatches (calculators and electronic dictionaries fitted with clock functions are not permitted,) spectacles, handkerchiefs, tissue paper, eye-drops, dictionaries in book form (technical dictionaries for specialist subjects not permitted) (You are not allowed to carry or use electronic devices such as mobile phones and portable digital players in the examination hall during examinations.)
  5. Follow the directions of the examination supervisors during the examinations.
  6. The cafeteria in the campus cannot be used. Make sure you make your own food and refreshment if needed.
  7. When visiting the examination hall, note that access to all other areas of the facility is restricted.
  8. There is no parking space available at the campus.
  9. Applicants who are disabled and need any special assistance during the examinations are invited to contact the admissions office before submitting an application.

Master’s Program

Qualification for applicants
If you meet any of the following conditions, you can apply for our master’s program.

  1. University graduates or the one expecting to graduate by March 2015.
  2. Individual who has been awarded a bachelor degree in accordance with Article 104, Clause 4 of the School Education Law, or expecting to be awarded a bachelor degree by March 2015.
  3. Individual who has completed sixteen years of study in overseas schools or people who are expected to complete this by March 2015.
  4. Individual specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) in “Ministry of Education Notification No.5 issued in 1953” * Graduates of Vocational Training Academy, Meteorological College and National Defense Academy, etc.
  5. Individual who has studied at universities for three or more years or has completed fifteen years of study in overseas schools as of March 2015, and who are deemed by the Graduate School of Arts to have acquired the prescribed number of credits by achieving excellent results.
  6. Individual who is deemed by the Graduate School of Arts after screening of qualification to have equivalent or higher academic capabilities to those who have graduated from university, and who are 22 years or higher of age or will become 22 years of age by March 2015. * Graduates of 2-year colleges, higher professional schools and vocational schools, etc., and those who have completed their studies at educational institutes in Japan offering foreign university curriculum or equivalent educational facilities.
  7. Individual who is deemed by the Graduate School of Arts to have equivalent or higher academic capabilities to people who have graduated from university.
* Foreigners who do not obtain a bachelor degree issued by university in Japan must have the N2 certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test(JLPT) by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchange and Services or have Japanese ability at least the N2 level of the JLPT.
* Applicants corresponding to 5. 6. or 7. above must first take “screening for qualification of applicants” during the specified period.

Doctoral Program

Qualification for applicants
If you meet any of the following conditions, you can apply for our doctoral program.
  1. Individual awarded a master’s degree or expecting to be awarded by March 2015.
  2. Individual awarded a master's degree in accordance with Article 104, Clause 4 of the School Education Law, or expecting to be awarded a master's degree by March 2015.
  3. Individual awarded a degree by foreign institutions that are deemed to be the equivalent of the master’s degree or expecting to be awarded such a degree by March 2015.
  4. Individual who has graduated from university or has completed sixteen years of study in overseas schools and completed two or more years of research in universities or research institutes, and who is deemed to have equivalent or higher academic capabilities to those who have been awarded masters' degrees.
  5. Individual deemed by the Graduate School of Arts to have equivalent or higher academic capabilities to people who have been awarded masters' degrees after individual screening of qualification for applicants, and who is 24 years or higher of age or will become 24 years of age by March 2015.
  6. Individual deemed by the Graduate School of Arts to have equivalent or higher academic capabilities to those who have been awarded masters' degrees.
* Foreigners who do not obtain a master degree issued by university in Japan must have the N2 certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test(JLPT) by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchange and Services or have Japanese ability at least the N2 level of the JLPT.
